Frequently Asked Questions
How often should I replace my motorcycle air filter?
Inspect every 5,000 miles, replace every 10,000-15,000 miles for paper. Foam filters cleaned every 1,000-3,000 miles depending on conditions. Off-road and dusty riding requires much more frequent service.
Foam vs. paper vs. cotton-gauze filter — which is best?
Foam: reusable, great for off-road. Paper: cheap, single-use, OEM standard. K&N cotton-gauze: reusable, high airflow, lifetime use. Choose based on filtration vs. airflow priorities and your riding conditions.
Can I clean a paper air filter?
Generally no — paper filter media is fragile and gets damaged by water/cleaners. A few high-quality paper filters claim to be cleanable; most aren't. When in doubt, replace.
Will a high-flow air filter increase horsepower?
Marginally — typical gain is 1-3 HP. Real performance comes from packaging air filter changes with intake reroute and fueling adjustment. Solo air filter swap rarely justifies the price.
Are pre-filters worth installing?
Absolutely for off-road and adventure riding — pre-filters wrap the main filter and catch coarse debris. Multiplies filter life. Outerwears, Twin Air, and others make affordable pre-filter kits.
