Frequently Asked Questions

What protection do mountain bikers wear?

Helmet (full-face for DH/enduro), knee pads, elbow pads, sometimes shin guards, neck brace for DH. Body armor or chest protector for aggressive enduro/DH. Match protection to riding style.

Hard shell vs. soft shell knee pads?

Soft shell (D3O, EVA foam): more comfortable, breathable, lower-coverage — best for trail and XC. Hard shell (with hard plastic): more protection, hot to wear — best for DH/enduro.

Do I need a back protector for cycling?

For DH, enduro, and aggressive jumping, yes — Leatt and POC make CE-rated back protectors. For trail and XC, optional. The risk profile of your riding determines necessity.

How tight should bike knee pads fit?

Snug — won't slide down when pedaling. Most have silicone grippers at top and bottom. Try them on with your riding shorts/pants. Loose pads slip down at the wrong moment.

Are kids' bike protection sized smaller versions of adult?

Sometimes — many brands now make youth-specific armor (Fox, 7iDP). Designed for smaller frames and shorter limbs. Don't put kids in oversized adult armor — protection won't work.
